General John Borling is a retired Major General and Air Force Academy graduate, who survived six years and eight months as a Prisoner of War with John McCain during the Vietnam War. In 1966, after 97 combat missions as a fighter pilot, General Borling was shot down by ground fire northeast of Hanoi, North Vietnam. Seriously injured, he was captured, escaped, and captured again before being tortured, interrogated, and thrown into the prison known to American POWs as the “Hanoi Hilton”.
Kevin + Steph had so many questions for General Borling. How did he get his fighter pilot nickname? What was the “Hanoi Hilton” like? How did they interrogate him? How would they torture him as an American POW? And what was that first phone call with his wife like after being gone for almost SEVEN YEARS?!
General John Borling’s military career spanned 37 years and he received 11 major awards and decorations from the military including a Presidential Unit Citation, The Silver Star, two Bronze Stars with V for Valor, and two Purple Hearts. He is also the author of the book, Taps on the Walls: Poems from the Hanoi Hilton. Copies of his book can be purchased for $25 by emailing General Borling at jlbviking@yahoo.com.
